Mobile Medical Clinics
Most days of the week, Hillside sends out a mobile clinic to rural villages in the Toledo district that are selected in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Mobile Clinics are among students’ and volunteers’ favorite experiences since they get to care for patients where they live and see first-hand the challenges facing patients.
Located in Eldridgeville, a village about 6 miles outside of Punta Gorda, the Clinic operates in cooperation with Belize’s Ministry of Health to provide primary care services for residents, free of charge.
Primary care services include treating common medical diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, childhood diseases and women’s health issues, preventative health care services, minor procedures, and medications.
In addition to Hillside Clinic’s Belizean staff, the Clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, and pharmacists. Under the oversight of licensed providers, students on educational rotations gain experience with patient care in a resource-restricted environment with multiple cultures.
