Medical Volunteers
Hillside welcomes both long and short term health professional volunteers. Past and present volunteers include physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational and physical therapists, physician assistants, and dentists. Faculty from participating medical, nursing and allied programs are encouraged to volunteer when students from their institution are scheduled. Volunteers are readily incorporated into all aspects of the daily Hillside program including work with the student/resident participants (see “Medical Education, Nursing Education and Allied Health Education Program sections.) Physician, nurse and therapist volunteers have the opportunity to deliver care while precepting the elective participants and impacting their educational experience. Long term volunteers at Hillside have the opportunity to contribute to program growth and innovation. All volunteers will be exposed to the diverse cultures of the area and be able to enjoy the unique natural surroundings of the region.

A two-week minimum stay is encouraged while long term volunteers often stay one year or longer. Housing and work related transportation is provided when available as well as license expenses. There is a small fee charged to both short-term and long-term volunteers to help defray some of the cost of living and working expenses at Hillside. Funds for airfare and a living stipend may be available through one of Hillside's partnering organizations to assist the long-term volunteer during their stay. For specific questions or plans, contact hillside.administration@gmail.com or jahartman@wisc.edu.
Obtaining a temporary license in Belize is mandatory for all volunteers prior to their arrival to Hillside. The Hillside administration will facilitate the licensing process. To do so, it will need to receive each volunteer’s health professional license and CV at least three months prior to their desired start date.
Both long and short-term volunteers have found their work at Hillside to be most worthwhile and rewarding. If interested, potential short-term volunteers are asked to contact the Hillside administration at the following email address: hillside.administration@gmail.com. Long-term volunteers willing to make a commitment of six months or more should contact HHCI stateside CEO, Jeff Hartman at (608) 751-7672, jahartman@wisc.edu. Those volunteers who decide to participate are asked to review the website in order to prepare for their time at Hillside. Those who may be able to assist the clinic through donation of medical goods including medications are asked to contact the clinic well in advance of their visit to ensure that these items can be cleared through customs.
