Wishlist from hillside Health Care Center
Physician/PA/NP wish list:
(Liaison of MD/PA/NP donation is Jeff Nicholson - jgnichol@wisc.edu or Dr. Bhargava - rbhar2000@yahoo.com)
- Medications: All medications at Hillside are given to the patients without charge. This year is unique in that we need to restock our entire pharmacy which has been an unexpected financial burden. The needs in this area are endless and growing. There are times when a medical provider can diagnose a disease but become powerless to treat it properly.
- Medical supplies: Here at Hillside we have the very basics to help us to diagnose and treat our patients. There are some supplies that do not cost a great deal in the United States but can make all the difference in the world to the care of the poor at our clinic in Belize. For example Diabetic testing with Sure Steps Pro strips, blood pressure machine, inhalers for Asthma ETC.
- Education items: Prevention is the most important tool we have to prevent early disease, disability and death. The medical volunteers and staff work with the community workers and nurses to help educate our patients in the clinic, on mobiles, in the homes, and in the schools. Basic items such as paper and markers cost a great deal in Belize.
- Medical Library: A proper medical library and access to medical information is essential because many medical providers come across diagnoses and conditions that they have never seen before and student volunteers are required to do community education projects that require textbooks, computers and internet access for research purposes.
Physical Therapy/ Occupational Therapy:
(Liaison of PT/OT funds is Jeff Hartman - jahartman@wisc.edu)
The PT and OT program at Hillside is one of the newest and most underfinanced and there is a lot of potential for development. This program provides the only licensed therapists in Belize and serves a large population of patients. The list of therapy equipment is so basic and yet essential for the success of this program. Please take a look at the list and then give generously to this outstanding program.
Nursing Program:
(Liaison for nursing donation is Grace Peterson - grace.peterson@cuw.edu)
Similar to the medical needs of the clinic, the home visit program is in need of essential medical equipment to serve the patients. The basic tools to assess patients in the homes are essential part of good nursing care. Each day boxes of medical supplies and medications need to be packed up and distributed to the poorest of Belize. In addition to caring for the poor the home visit program offers nursing and medical students the opportunity to care for patients in the most intimate and direct way possible in their homes. Transportation costs, medical supply costs, medication costs, and record keeping are just some of the daily financial needs of this vital program.
