Jungle Truck
The roads of Belize are very demanding and it takes persistence to travel from village to village. Despite this, Hillside travels thousands of miles every year to reach those who don’t have easy access to health care. Every Tuesday and Thursday Hillside sends medical teams out to the rural jungle villages to provide high level health care services and as a result, our fleet of trucks experience a lot of wear and tear and thousands of dollars are spent on gas, repairs and maintenance of the vehicles. Recently, it was noted that one of our vehicles was becoming inadequate to navigate through the bumpy and uneven terrain and that we needed to replace the vehicle to ensure adequate safety for our volunteers and staff.
A very generous family from Hinsdale, IL heard about our need for a new and safe vehicle and wanted to do something about this. This family has a daughter who graduated from Northwestern Medical School and had volunteered in other rural areas of the world and noted how wonderful it was to have a van to travel in to treat those who otherwise would not have received treatment. As a result, they were inspired and decided to partner with Dan Meehan and the Knights of Malta to help Hillside with the purchase of a 13 passenger Toyota vehicle. This vehicle should join our fleet this summer.
