Application process checklist:

  1. Carefully review information in the all of the relevant tabs of this web page before applying.  
  1. Download the application form by clicking the download link at the bottom of the page.  The application will be downloaded in MS WORD format.  Provide the requested information and then send the completed application form as an attachment to an email to: hillside.administration@gmail.com  Please make sure to read the Hillside International Travel Policy and type “I agree” in the indicated spot at the end of the application; applications will not be considered complete if this is absent.
  1. Forward by email a letter of good standing from a faculty member at their school or from their residency program director with the electronic application.
  1. Pay your course fee within 30 days of acceptance by using “Google Checkout” (instructions below) or mailing a personal check, cashiers check or money order to  Hillside Health Care International P.O. Box 151, Brookfield, WI 53008-0151 USA.
  1. Hillside will confirm receipt of a completed application within 5 days of its arrival, and within two weeks, will notify applicants of their status regarding acceptance into the program. Notification will be via email.  

Additional Requirements for Applicants:

  1. Obtain evacuation insurance for the time they are in Belize; proof of insurance must be submitted via email to hillside.administration@gmail.com at least two weeks prior to start date of the elective.  Insurance may be obtained through numerous companies including International SOS at 1-800-523-8662 or www.internationalsos.com.

  2. Make their travel arrangements to and from Punta Gorda, Belize. Once confirmed, the travel itinerary is to be forwarded well in advance of participation.  Please mail the itinerary to hillside.administration@gmail.com.

  3. The clinic will provide transportation from the Punta Gorda airstrip to the clinic housing facilities.

  4. All licensed physician residents must forward their medical license if they desire temporary in-country privileges (gaining an in- country license has its advantages but is not mandatory for resident physicians). We ask that medical licenses be sent three months prior to the participant’s arrival. These may be faxed to 011 501 722 2312 (the 011 is the international code from the US and must be substituted for if faxing from another country) or scanned and sent as an email attachment to hillside.administration@gmail.com .

  5. Obtain a passport or ensure that their existing passports are updated. US participants can obtain passport application forms from the United States Postal Services offices. Obtaining a passport may take up to six weeks.

  6. Visit the www.cdc.gov to ensure immunizations are up to date. This site will also provide the recommended malaria prophylaxis for Belize which is required of all participants.

  7. Provide the very earliest possible notice to the clinic in the case of cancellation of participation.
Participants are also asked to:
  • Review the section on donating drugs and/or medical supplies to the clinic in the Our Partners / Our Hopes / Help Support Hillside! tab.  If you have a possible source of donated drugs and/or medical supplies, please correspond with the clinic well in advance to evaluate what are the clinics greatest needs.  A list of drugs and/or medical supplies you plan to bring in quantities that would not be considered as “for personal use” should be forwarded to the clinic at least two months before your arrival so that clearance through customs can be arranged.  All donations of any kind are most welcome by the clinic staff, but even more so, by the people the clinic serves.
  • Please refer to the Travel Information section for more details on how to prepare for your international elective participation.
  • Please review the educational program component of the student tab for familiarity with the activities and objectives of the elective.
